Recorded in Tibet, in Kirti Monastery of Ngawa on the 15th day of Amdo New Year 2141. That day is called "Day of Miracles" and celebrates miracles accomplished by buddha Shakyamuni after his enlightenment for fifteen days in order to bolster the devotion of disciples.
He performed the miracles during this time to overpower the six teachers of non-Buddhist views, called Tirthikas, who challenged him. He displayed miraculous powers for 15 days to increase the devotion and merit of future disciples.
