North Korea has taken a concrete military step by moving a missile with “considerable range” to its east coast, South Korea's Defence minister has said.
While Kim Jong-un’s regime has repeatedly threatened to launch a nuclear strike on America, this missile “does not seem to be aimed at the US mainland”. A military source told Yonhap, the South Korean news agency, that it could be a “Musudan”, an untested model with a possible range of 2,000 - 2,500 miles, allowing it to strike the US military base on Guam.

The relationship between China, North Korea and Iran, each of whom seeks to challenge American power in their respective regions should be viewed from this simple perspective, and it was clearly illuminated by the recent third atomic test by North Korea, who, it is assumed, tested a miniaturised nuclear warhead suitable for delivery by a ballistic missile.
Firstly, China's condemnation of the test should be considered highly disingenuous. If China really did not wish the North Koreans to go nuclear they could have prevented it many years ago. Instead they have quietly encouraged the process, through a process of 'active non-intervention', viewing it as a useful way of demonstrating to the world that America is no longer powerful enough to enforce its foreign policy desires in the region of the Korean peninsula.
In addition, the presence of Iran's leading nuclear scientist at the test not only demonstrated that both Iran and North Korea seem to be co-operating in the attainment of their nuclear goals, but also that China is also a strong supporter of Iran's nuclear aspirations with the same objective of demonstrating the loss of American influence but this time in the Middle East. The lessons of the test should be very clear. As it stands what China says and wants, and what it actually does, are often worlds apart in matters of its expanding global influence. Secondly, Iran is not simply interested in nuclear power for its own sake but seeks to become a nuclear power with the capability to deliver its weapons far beyond the boundaries of the Middle East.
