Serta, March 8, 2013 : Pema, 22, was arrested by Chinese authorities for his involvement in the protest in Serta a year ago, on January 24, 2012.The protest began peacefully but Chinese security forces opened fire on the crowd, killing at least five. Pema was wounded in the arm, but managed to escape into the hills. After evading capture for more than a year, he was taken into custody on March 8 following a visit to his family.
Demonstration broke out after the arrest of two monks, Nyima and Tonyoe Gendun, who shouted slogans for the freedom of Tibet on January 22, 2012. They were arrested after they suffered an extreme police violence.
The protest in Serthar began on January 23, 2012, with the appearance in public of posters urging Tibetans not to allow the bodies of protesters who set themselves ablaze to be taken away by Chinese security forces.
Leaflets containing the Tibetan national flag and slogans such as’ ‘Shame on China,’ and ‘Victory to Tibet’ were scattered during the protests,”.
